    • A few quick facts about the man (https://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/15/sports/football/emlen-tunnell-the-giants-greatest-packer.html)
      • Emlin Tunnell was a Garrett Hillian who was a star halfback at Radnor High School in 1940 and 1941.
      • As a freshman football player in 1942 (at the University of Toledo), Tunnell was knocked unconscious by a collision that broke a neck vertebra and left in him critical condition. When he awoke in the hospital, a priest was administering Last Rites.
      • He was told he would never play football again so he decided to enlist with the Coast Guard (Before that, Tunnell had never been on a boat, and he could barely swim.)
      • During his time with the Coast Guard, he was involved in multiple lifesaving exploits (honored posthumously in 2012)
      • In 1948, he hitchhiked from his home in Garrett Hill to the Polo Grounds in Harlem, showing up unannounced, to ask for a tryout
      • He was the 1st African American to play for the New York Giants
      • He was the African American to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
      • In July of 2021, a new Coast Guard Cutter was named to honor the hero (https://www.marinelink.com/news/new-fast-response-cutter-honors-emlen-488857)
